Major Bren Derlin is made from a Taun Taun Hoth Luke Skywalker. I was wanting to make this figure and lucked out and found the Taun Taun Luke Beast Assortment at Toy's R Us for $5! I have seen many different customs of Major Derlin; and I found reference pictures of him in TWO different outfits. I think one was pre-production, and did not make into the film. So I based him on what I saw in Empire.
Best I can tell unlike Luke, Major Derlin is wearing a coat and not a vest. So I filled all of the waffle patterns on the chest & arms with sculpey. I filed smooth the thing on Lukes chest to look like a pocket, and used sculpey on the other side to form another pocket. Once the sculpey cured I painted the arms, chest, and "skirt" part of the vest khaki, it now looks like a coat. I painted red trim on the pockets; and painted the blue rank insignia red. I also painted the scarf on the hat; belt and holster dark brown. Major Derlin did not wear a holster in the film, but it wasn't big enough of an issue for me to file down the holster. I am sure somewhere in the "Expanded Universe" of Empire Major Derlin fired a weapon.
I formed a moustach from sculpey and painted it dark brown. I then drew a "5 O'clock shadow" using a sharp pencil. I finished him off with a coat of Testor's dull coat.
